What was Jaxx Liberty?

Jaxx Liberty was a non-custodial, multi-platform cryptocurrency wallet built to make managing digital assets feel straightforward. Launched by Decentral Inc.—founded by Ethereum co-founder Anthony Di Iorio—it brought Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin and dozens of other assets into one interface.

At its peak, it supported more than 80 cryptocurrencies and ran on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS, as well as a browser extension. Users could see portfolio values, review transactions and use integrated services to exchange assets without leaving the app.

It did not require an account or identity checks. Instead, private keys were held locally on the user’s device, with a 12-word recovery phrase used to back up access. That self-custody model gave users control—and responsibility for keeping their backup safe.

“

With a self-custody wallet, control of the keys—and the responsibility to protect them—belongs to you.

A core principle of crypto self-custody

Key features that defined it

The convenience was the point: one place to keep an eye on a varied portfolio, without handing custody to an exchange.

01

One wallet, many assets

Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Dash, Bitcoin Cash, Dogecoin and a wide range of ERC-20 tokens in one place.

02

Across your devices

Desktop, mobile and browser extension access, paired with the same recovery phrase.

03

Built-in exchange

In-app swaps were available through integrated third-party services such as ShapeShift.

04

A portfolio at a glance

Price updates, transaction history and visual summaries made it easier to follow holdings.

05

No account required

Users could create a wallet without registration or identity verification. Keys stayed under the user’s control.

The shutdown and its consequences

Official development ceased in 2023

Jaxx Liberty no longer receives security updates, bug fixes or official support.

As operating systems changed, the app could become less reliable—and unpatched software can expose users to avoidable security risks. The sunset also left former users searching for recovery options, which scammers have exploited with fake installers, impersonation sites and phishing pages.

RISK 01

Outdated software

An unsupported wallet cannot be relied on to receive fixes for newly discovered issues.

RISK 02

Fake recovery offers

Fraudsters may promise to validate a phrase, restore funds remotely or provide a “safe” installer.

Red flag: Any person or website asking you to type your recovery phrase into a browser, send it in a message or share it with “support” is not a safe recovery path.

How to recover funds safely

A recovery phrase can restore access, but it also grants control of the wallet. Treat it like the keys to a safe: use it carefully, in the right place, and never reveal it to another person.

01

Locate your 12-word phrase

Find your original offline backup. Do not photograph it, paste it into notes, email it or upload it to a cloud service while preparing to restore.

02

Choose a maintained wallet

Get wallet software directly from the maker’s official website or verified app store listing. Confirm it supports the assets you need to recover.

03

Restore only in the wallet app

Use the app’s recovery/import flow on a device you trust. No legitimate website needs your phrase to check, validate or “unlock” your wallet.

04

Move assets to a fresh wallet

Once you can access your funds, create a new wallet and securely back up its new phrase. Transfer assets to the new addresses and verify each network carefully.

No phrase, but still have the original device?

Wallet data may remain in local application storage. Extraction is specialized, not guaranteed, and best left to a reputable professional working securely offline. Never give anyone remote access to your device or reveal a phrase.

Review common questions

Frequently asked questions

Is Jaxx Liberty still available for download?

No. Jaxx Liberty was discontinued in 2023. Treat sites offering old installers as untrusted. If you have your recovery phrase, restore it only in a current wallet obtained directly from its official source.

Can I recover my Jaxx wallet without the 12-word phrase?

Recovery is difficult without the phrase. If the original device still has Jaxx installed and its application data is intact, a qualified recovery professional may be able to examine it. This is not guaranteed; avoid anyone asking you to send them your phrase or wallet files.

Was Jaxx Liberty hacked or a scam?

Jaxx Liberty was a legitimate Decentral Inc. product, not a scam. Like any software wallet, it had security trade-offs, including risks associated with local device storage. Its discontinuation also made impersonation and phishing attempts more likely.

Which wallets can accept a Jaxx recovery phrase?

Jaxx used a 12-word BIP-39 phrase. Trust Wallet, Exodus, and some hardware wallets such as Trezor or Ledger may support compatible recovery flows; Electrum and MetaMask may be relevant for specific Bitcoin or Ethereum-based assets. Compatibility and asset derivation support vary, so confirm support with the wallet maker for each asset before restoring.

What should I do if I find my old recovery phrase?

Use it only inside a trusted, actively maintained wallet installed from its official source. After confirming your assets are accessible, create a fresh wallet with a new recovery phrase and move funds to it. Never reuse the old phrase for new funds.
